Measure Development & Research
The NIH Toolbox® for Assessment of Neurological and Behavioral Function (NIH Toolbox®) began in 2006 with the aim of developing a brief, standardized assessment of neurobehavioral function. Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Blueprint for Neuroscience, the NIH Toolbox team included more than 250 scientists from nearly 80 academic institutions. Version 1 of the NIH Toolbox was released as a web-based system. It included a battery of normed and validated tests of Cognition, Motor, Sensation and Emotion for individuals ages 3 to 85 years old. Version 2 was released as an iPad app with a portable, flexible, and easy-to-use administration platform. The NIH Toolbox version 3 (released 2023) includes an improved user interface and user experience, streamlined test instructions, and updated scoring algorithms. More information about the development, norming, and validation of specific NIH Toolbox tests is available in Publications and NIHToolbox.org.
