PROMIS® Health Organization

The PROMIS Health Organization (PHO) was formed in 2008 by PROMIS principal investigators to facilitate the transition from National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to a self-sustaining future. It is now a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization open to all.

Mission of the PHO

To improve health outcomes by developing, maintaining, improving, and encouraging the application of the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) in research and clinical practice.

Organizational Structure

To PHO is led by a board of directors with membership opportunities open to anyone interested in PROMIS. The PHO board and members work to encourage the use of PROMIS by offering guidance and education on the scientific standards to promote widespread use and adoption of PROMIS.

PHO and HealthMeasures

The PHO and HealthMeasures work collaboratively. In fact, many HealthMeasures scientists are members of the PHO. Together, they aim to advance the science of health outcomes by promoting the widespread use of PROMIS in research and clinical practice. They offer guidance and education to new and experienced PROMIS users.

  • The PHO offers training and education from PROMIS basics to implementation and analysis. It is an open, growing membership organization that welcomes members from around the world who are interested in bringing the patient’s voice to the forefront of medicine. The organization’s members include early career and experienced researchers, clinicians, students, health system administrators, health policy experts, representatives of the technology and pharmaceutical industries, and government.
  • HealthMeasures’ focus is broader than PROMIS; it includes Neuro-QoL, ASCQ-Me, and NIH Toolbox. HealthMeasures primary aims are to curate and distribute the HealthMeasures in multiple formats (e.g., paper, apps) to advance their widespread adoption.
