Some measures like physical function, pain interference, and ability to participate in social activities ask about specific activities. For example, “Are you able to do chores such as vacuuming and yard work?” and “Are you able to use a hammer to pound a nail?” are both part of the PROMIS Physical Function item bank. Respondents should be instructed to answer all items to the best of their ability. For a respondent who indicates the item asks about an activity they don’t do, instruct them to consider what that activity would be like, and imagine or predict how it would be for them. For example, imagine the upper body strength, coordination, and dexterity needed to pound a nail with a hammer and evaluate to what degree they have that level of function. Respondents should always have the opportunity to skip an item if needed as well.

What guidance do you have for participants when they feel that a PROMIS question does not apply to them?
I am asking specifically during the Coronavirus/COVID19 stay-at-home recommendations, thus questions around social activity and engagement may not apply (for example, "How much did pain interfere with your ability to participate in social activities?"). However, I assume this question would apply to other circumstances as well.
